Piston, ring and gasket kit that fits Gravely L-head engines - the 5, 6.6 and 7.6 horsepower singles used across the walk-behind range. Piston replaces 14592. Rings replace 14594. Gasket set replaces 15676. The tractor maker built these engines in-house rather than buying them in, so the name here is the engine maker, not just the badge on the tractor. The engine is a side-valve - L-head - single of 29 cubic inches. All three horsepower ratings share the same 3-1/4 inch bore. The difference between a 5, a 6.6 and a 7.6 is carburetion, governed speed and head design, not displacement, which is why one kit serves all three. The factory service data gives standard cylinder diameter as 3.2535 to 3.2545 inch and displacement as 29.0 cubic inches across the range. Three rings: a chrome top compression ring, a steel second compression ring and an oil scraper in the bottom groove. Gaps to check on assembly are .012 to .020 on the top ring, .008 to .016 on the second, and .015 to .055 on a three-piece oil ring. Piston skirt clearance is .003 to .005. A compression ring that has opened to .030 or beyond is finished. Before ordering, measure. These engines date from the late 1930s through the mid 1970s and the great majority have been apart at least once. A standard-size kit will not help a block that has already been taken .020 over. Mic the cylinder, and check the piston crown and the block for a stamped oversize figure. Pistons and rings were supplied in .005, .010, .015, .020, .025 and .030 over. If the engine tag is gone, which it usually is, the spark plug tells you which engine you have: an angled plug in the head is the 6.6, a vertical plug is the 7.6. The factory stopped supplying these parts a long time ago. Valves, valve springs, bearings, crankshaft and head bolts are not included.

  • PISTON, RINGS AND GASKET SET IN ONE KIT - Piston replaces 14592, rings replace 14594 and the gasket set replaces 15676. Fits the Gravely-built L-head engine used across the walk-behind range.
  • ALL THREE HORSEPOWER RATINGS SHARE ONE BORE - The 5, 6.6 and 7.6 HP L-head engines are all 3-1/4 inch bore and 29 cubic inches. The horsepower difference comes from carburetion, governed speed and head design, not from bore, which is why one kit covers all three.
  • THREE RINGS - A chrome top compression ring, a steel second compression ring and an oil scraper at the bottom. Ring gaps to check on assembly: top .012 to .020, second .008 to .016, and .015 to .055 on a three-piece oil ring. Piston skirt clearance .003 to .005.
  • MEASURE THE BORE BEFORE YOU ORDER - STANDARD ONLY - These engines have been in service since the 1930s and most have been apart before. A standard-size kit is no use in a block already bored .020 over. Mic the cylinder and look for an oversize figure stamped on the piston crown or the block before you commit. Oversizes were supplied in .005, .010, .015, .020, .025 and .030.
  • TELLING A 6.6 FROM A 7.6 - Look at the spark plug. An angled plug in the head is the 6.6; a vertical plug is the 7.6. Useful when the tag is long gone, which on these it usually is. Valves, bearings, crankshaft and the head bolts are not included.
