.010 Over Piston Kit 45-874-03-S Fits Kohler K341 M16
Piston kit with chrome-faced rings that fits the Kohler K341 and M16, .010 inch oversize. Replaces 45-874-03-S. SPECIFICATION Standard bore - 3.7495 to 3.7505 inch, nominal 3.750 This kit - .010 oversize, finished bore 3.760 inch Maximum wear limit on a standard bore - 3.753 inch Ring end gap, fresh bore - .013 to .025 inch Piston to bore clearance, new - .007 to .010 inch THE MODEL SUFFIX IS NOT A FITMENT QUESTION. K341A, K341S, K341AS, K341AQS - those letters describe the oil pan design and the start type, not the engine's bore. They all take the same piston. The M16 is the same engine family and takes it too. READING THE SIZE OFF THE PISTON. Ours are size-marked on the crown in quote marks - a standard piston reads "STD" and the oversizes are marked to match. If your old piston is out, read the crown. It is more reliable than the paperwork from a rebuild that may have happened decades ago. ON INSTALLATION. More than one piston design was used on the K341 over the years, and some carry a directional mark on the crown. If your old piston has one, note which way it was facing before you lift it out and put the new one in the same way. THE OVERSIZE LADDER 45-874-01-S - standard 45-874-02-S - .003 oversize 45-874-03-S - .010 oversize - THIS KIT 45-874-04-S - .020 oversize 45-874-05-S - .030 oversize Ring sets on their own: 45-108-06-S standard, 45-108-07-S at .010, 45-108-08-S at .020. ON THE WORD CHROME. The chrome facing is on the top compression ring, not on the piston. It is there to resist wear in a cast iron bore and it is a real advantage - but there is no chrome piston designation, so do not go looking for one on a parts diagram.
- FITS KOHLER K341 AND M16 - .010 inch oversize, finished bore 3.760 inch. Replaces 45-874-03-S. Supplied as piston with its matching ring set. Standard bore on these engines is 3.750 inch, so this is for a block that has been bored .010 over.
- THE MODEL SUFFIX DOES NOT MATTER - K341A, K341S, K341AS, K341AQS and the rest all take the same piston. Those letters describe the oil pan and the start type, not the bore. What DOES matter is the bore size, and the next bullet shows how to read it.
- THE SIZE IS STAMPED ON THE CROWN - ours are marked in quote marks, so a standard piston reads "STD" and the oversizes are marked to match. If you have your old piston out on the bench, read the crown rather than trusting what the last person to open the engine told you. A block bored at some point in the last fifty years is often not the size anybody remembers.
- THE FULL OVERSIZE LADDER - 45-874-01-S is standard, 45-874-02-S at .003, 45-874-03-S at .010 which is this one, 45-874-04-S at .020 and 45-874-05-S at .030. Matching ring sets on their own are 45-108-06-S standard, 45-108-07-S at .010 and 45-108-08-S at .020. Measure the finished bore and order to match - do not guess from the last rebuild.
- CHROME MEANS THE RINGS - The chrome facing is on the top compression ring, which is what resists wear in a cast iron bore. There is no chrome piston designation in the parts list. Check ring end gap in the bore before assembly - .013 to .025 inch on a fresh bore - and stagger the gaps on installation. One habit worth keeping: if your old piston has any mark on the crown, note which way it faced before you lift it out.
