A hardened crank seal lets air in, the engine runs lean and the piston scores, so fit new seals whenever the crankcase is apart, and use the set whenever the blower surges, will not idle or runs hot from an air leak. Scrape every face to bare metal, press the seals in square, tighten the cylinder bolts in a cross pattern, and pressure and vacuum test the crankcase.
