Stihl 036 MS 360 034 Super 48mm Pop Up Piston Kit Gaskets
Raised-crown pop up piston with top end gaskets for the Stihl 036, 036 Pro, MS 360 and 034 Super chainsaws. 48mm bore, 61.5cc, 34mm stroke. Cross-references to Stihl piston part number 1125 030 2001. READ THIS BEFORE ORDERING - 034 SUPER ONLY. The 034 Super shares the 48mm bore and the 61.5cc displacement with the 036, and the two use the same piston part number. The plain 034 and the 034 AV do not: they are 56.5cc on a 46mm bore, and the MS 340 is 46mm as well. A 48mm piston will not fit a 46mm cylinder. Many sellers list 034, 034 Super and MS 340 together on one 48mm kit, which is wrong. Read the full designation off the saw. CONTENTS. Piston, rings, wrist pin, circlips and the top end gaskets. The cylinder is not included, so this is the kit for an engine whose bore is still serviceable. Crankshaft seals are not included and are worth replacing while the engine is apart. WHAT A POP UP PISTON IS. The crown sits taller than a standard flat top, so it takes up more of the combustion chamber at top dead center and the compression ratio rises. The same raised crown reduces clearance between the piston and the cylinder head across the squish band. SQUISH HAS TO BE MEASURED. Crown height varies between production batches, so the clearance you finish with is yours to measure rather than a number that can be printed here. Lay soft solder across the squish band through the spark plug hole, turn the engine through top dead center by hand, and measure the crushed solder. Clearance that is too wide gives up most of the benefit. Clearance that is too tight risks the crown contacting the head. Base gasket thickness is the normal adjustment, and the gaskets in this kit are what you set it with - but changing base gasket thickness also shifts port timing, so make that change deliberately. BEFORE REASSEMBLY. A scored bore is a symptom rather than the fault. Pressure and vacuum test the crankcase and deal with a hardened crankshaft seal, a split impulse line or a loose intake boot first. Check ring end gap in this cylinder, use a ring compressor, and fit the circlips with the open end turned away from the ports.
- 48MM POP UP PISTON KIT WITH TOP END GASKETS FOR THE STIHL 036 AND MS 360 - Piston, rings, wrist pin, circlips and the top end gaskets. Fits the 036, the 036 Pro, the MS 360 and the 034 Super, all 61.5cc on a 48mm bore. Cross-references to Stihl piston part number 1125 030 2001.
- 034 SUPER YES, PLAIN 034 NO - THIS IS THE ONE TO GET RIGHT - The 034 Super is 61.5cc on a 48mm bore and this fits it. The plain 034 and the 034 AV are 56.5cc on a 46mm bore, and so is the MS 340. This piston will not fit those. Read the full model designation, including the word Super, off the saw before ordering.
- WHAT A POP UP PISTON ACTUALLY DOES - The crown stands taller than a flat top piston, so it fills more of the combustion chamber at top dead center and the compression ratio goes up. The same raised crown leaves less clearance between the crown and the head across the squish band, which is why that clearance has to be measured.
- MEASURE SQUISH BEFORE YOU RUN IT - Lay soft solder across the squish band through the plug hole, turn the engine through top dead center by hand, and measure the crushed thickness. Crown height varies between production runs. Too wide gives up the benefit, too tight lets the crown touch the head, and the base gasket in this kit is the adjustment.
- THE GASKETS ARE IN THE BOX, THE CYLINDER IS NOT - Top end gaskets are included, which is useful here because gasket thickness is how you set the squish. The cylinder is not included, so this suits a bore that is still good. Crankshaft seals are not included and are worth replacing while the engine is open.
