Three ring standard bore piston ring set - top compression, second compression and oil control - replacing Briggs & Stratton part number 495854. Briggs lists 495854 as the replacement for the earlier 497522, so both numbers point at this same standard bore set. Confirmed applications include 28N707, 28N777 and 287707 - the 28 cubic inch single-cylinder engines rated at 12, 12.5 and 13 horsepower, built before date code 01041900. Read the model, type and code off the blower housing and confirm 495854 against your parts book before ordering. Ordering by horsepower alone is how people end up with the wrong set. Which brings up the check that actually matters on this part. The 495854 oil control ring is 3/16 inch wide. Briggs used a 1/16 inch oil ring on other sets in the same horsepower range, and the two look close enough on a parts screen that they get mixed up regularly. Measure the oil ring groove in your piston, or the ring you are pulling out, before you order. It takes a minute and it is the difference between a set that goes in and a set that goes back. Standard size only. If the block has been bored oversize these will not seal. Mic the bore at the top of ring travel, where the wear is worst. One more near miss: 499996 is also a Briggs standard piston ring set covering a similar horsepower range, but it belongs to the L-head opposed twin family. Different engine, similar-looking number. Rings only. Piston, wrist pin, clips and gaskets are not included.

  • THREE RING STANDARD BORE SET - Top compression, second compression and oil control. Replaces Briggs & Stratton part number 495854. Briggs lists 495854 as the replacement for the older 497522, so whichever of those two numbers your parts book shows, this is the set.
  • FITS THE 28 CUBIC INCH BRIGGS SINGLES BUILT BEFORE DATE CODE 01041900 - Confirmed applications include 28N707, 28N777 and 287707, covering the 12 HP, 12.5 HP and 13 HP engines. Read the model, type and code off the blower housing. The date code is the last figure in that group and it matters on this engine.
  • CHECK THE OIL RING WIDTH - THIS IS THE CHECK THAT SAVES THE JOB - The 495854 oil control ring is 3/16 inch wide. Briggs used a 1/16 inch oil ring on other sets in the same horsepower range, and a set ordered by horsepower alone very often turns up with the wrong one. Measure the oil ring groove in your piston, or the old ring, before ordering.
  • STANDARD SIZE ONLY - These are standard bore rings. If the block has already been bored oversize they will not seal and you will be doing the job twice. Mic the bore at the top of ring travel first, where the wear is.
  • DO NOT CONFUSE WITH 499996 - That is also a Briggs standard piston ring set in a similar horsepower range, but it belongs to the L-head opposed twin family. Different engine, adjacent number. Rings only - piston, wrist pin, clips and gaskets are not included.
