All-metal chainsaw stump vise for sharpening a chain in the field. Drive the spike into a stump or a solid log, seat the guide bar in the jaw and clamp it. The bar is then held steady enough to file properly with both hands, and the chain stays on the saw the whole time. Suitable for Stihl, Husqvarna, Echo, Jonsered and any other make. Because it clamps the bar rather than the machine, it does not care what saw you run or what pitch your chain is. Any bar that fits the jaw opening works. The only practical limit is a very wide or heavy-gauge bar. The spike takes a hammer every time you set it up, which is why construction matters on a tool this simple. Thin stamped metal and cheap castings crack or mushroom at the spike. This one is metal throughout. Using it well: Pick a solid stump or log and drive the spike in vertically and deep. A spike set at an angle or driven in halfway lets the whole thing rock, and that is worse than filing freehand. Seat the bar and clamp it, then check that the bottom run of the chain clears the vise body before you start. Mark your first tooth with a marker. File every tooth on one side with the same number of strokes at the same angle - three strokes is the usual rule - advancing the chain by hand between teeth. Work all the way round to the mark, then turn and do the other side. Check depth gauges separately with a gauge. One honest note. A stump vise holds the bar. It does not guide the file and it does not set your angle - that is a different tool. What it buys you is a steady bar and both hands free, which is what makes the angle consistent from tooth to tooth. File, file guide, depth gauge gauge and the saw are not included.

  • SHARPEN IN THE WOODS, NOT BACK AT THE SHOP - Drive the spike into a stump or a solid log, clamp the bar in the jaw, and file with both hands free. The chain never comes off the bar. A dull chain costs you the rest of the day; this puts an edge back on in about ten minutes at the cutting site.
  • FITS ANY SAW, BECAUSE IT CLAMPS THE BAR - Suitable for Stihl, Husqvarna, Echo, Jonsered and any other make. It holds the guide bar rather than the machine, so the brand of saw is irrelevant and so is chain pitch. Any bar that fits the jaw opening will work. Very wide or heavy-gauge bars are the only real limit.
  • ALL METAL - The spike takes direct hammer blows every time you set it, which is where thin stamped and cast pot-metal vises crack or mushroom over. This one is metal throughout.
  • DRIVE IT IN DEEP AND STRAIGHT - This is the step people get wrong. A spike driven in at an angle or only part way lets the whole thing rock, and a rocking vise is worse than no vise. Set it vertical, drive it well in, then check the bottom run of the chain clears the body before you start filing.
  • IT HOLDS THE BAR, IT DOES NOT GUIDE THE FILE - Worth being straight about. A stump vise steadies the work so your angle stays consistent; it is not a filing guide and it does not set the angle for you. Mark your first tooth, give every tooth the same number of strokes at the same angle, work around to the mark, then do the other side. File, file guide, depth gauge and the saw are not included.
