2 Prong Electronic Ignition Module McCulloch 10-10 1-10 710
Two prong solid state electronic ignition module for vintage McCulloch chainsaws. Replaces the breaker points and the condenser, keeping your original coil. Instructions are included. The module is a transistorised switch that wires in where the points were, inside the flywheel. Instead of a mechanical contact opening and closing on a rubbing block, the module switches the coil's primary circuit electronically. There is nothing to file, nothing to gap and nothing to wear. It fits any McCulloch still running a points coil - 10-10, 1-10 through 9-10, 710, 250 and the rest of the range. The test is not the model number, it is what is under the flywheel. If your saw has breaker points, this replaces them. If it already has a factory electronic module, it does not need this and this will not fit it. Two hard limits, both easy to check before ordering: It will not work on a flywheel with three magnets. Count them. It will not work on battery ignition. The module itself has two prongs, and it suits both two-leg and three-leg coils on single-cylinder engines - the legs are the laminations on the coil, not the prongs on the module, and those two get confused, and it also replaces the older Wico, Prestolite and Phelon points arrangements. Why people fit them: a points rubbing block wears down, the gap closes, and the ignition timing walks out with it. That is why a saw that started on the second pull last season fights you this season. Points also gum up and corrode on a saw that has been standing. A solid state module holds its switching point permanently and is sealed against damp. What it will not do, stated plainly: it will not add power, raise RPM or alter the ignition timing, which on these saws is fixed by the flywheel and is not adjustable. And a vintage saw that will not start is at least as often a fuel problem, a compression problem or a dead coil. Pull the plug, ground it against the cylinder and crank it. No spark with sound kill-switch wiring is what sends you here. Coil, flywheel, spark plug and plug lead are not included.
- TWO PRONG SOLID STATE MODULE - Replaces the points and the condenser, keeping your original coil. Two prongs on the module itself. Nothing to file, nothing to gap, nothing to wear out. Instructions are included.
- FITS ANY MCCULLOCH RUNNING A POINTS COIL - 10-10, 1-10 through 9-10, 710, 250 and the rest of the range, as long as the saw still has breaker points. If the saw already left the factory with an electronic module, it does not need this and this will not fit it. Look inside the flywheel: points means yes.
- WILL NOT WORK ON A THREE MAGNET FLYWHEEL - That is the hard limit and it takes ten seconds to check. Count the magnets in your flywheel before ordering. It also will not work on battery ignition. The module is two prong and suits both two-leg and three-leg coils - those are the laminations on the coil, not the prongs on the module, and the two get confused.
- WHY PEOPLE FIT THESE - A points rubbing block wears, the gap closes, and the timing walks out with it, which is why a saw that ran fine last season is hard to start this one. Points also gum and corrode on a saw that has sat. A solid state module holds its switching point for good and is sealed against damp, so the saw starts the same way in November as it did in June.
- WHAT IT WILL NOT DO - It will not add power, raise RPM or change the timing, which on these saws is fixed and not adjustable. And a vintage saw that will not start is at least as often fuel, compression or a bad coil. Confirm you have no spark with a grounded plug before you order. Coil, flywheel, plug and plug lead are not included.
