Two intake valves that fit the Onan P216, P218 and P220 twin cylinder engines. Replaces 110-3479. QUANTITY Two valves are supplied, which is one intake valve per cylinder. These are twin cylinder engines, so one purchase does the whole engine for the intake side. INTAKE ONLY These are intake valves. Exhaust valves are a separate part number and are not included here. The exhaust valve runs far hotter, is usually a different head diameter and often a different alloy, and the two are not interchangeable. If you are rebuilding the top end completely you will need exhaust valves as well. FITMENT. P216, P218 and P220, including the LX720 and LX770 versions of those engines. IDENTIFYING YOUR ENGINE. The model and spec number are on a tag or decal on the engine itself. The plate on the machine carries the equipment builder's own number, which does not cross to engine parts. WHY INTAKE VALVES FAIL ON THESE ENGINES Valve recession - the valve sinks into its seat over many hours and clearance closes up. You lose compression and the engine gets hard to start. Stem and guide wear - side play lets the valve sit crooked on the seat, so it stops sealing and can start to hang open. Carbon build up on the stem and the back of the head, which also holds the valve off its seat. Either way the symptom is usually one weak cylinder rather than two, so compare the two sides before you condemn both. FITTING Lap each valve to its own seat, one at a time, and look for a clean even contact band right round the face. Check guide clearance with the new valve fitted. A new valve in a worn guide will leak again before long. Check the seat width and recut if it has spread. Set valve clearance cold to the figure in your engine manual once the head is back on and torqued. Torque the head bolts evenly in stages rather than pulling one down at a time, or you will distort the head.

  • TWO INTAKE VALVES, ONE PER CYLINDER - These are twin cylinder engines, so two intake valves do the whole engine and two are supplied. Replaces 110-3479. Exhaust valves are a different part with a different number and are NOT in this listing, so if you are replacing everything you need those as well.
  • FITS ONAN P216, P218 AND P220 - Also the LX720 and LX770 versions of the same engines. Read the model and spec number from the tag on the engine rather than going by the machine it sits in, because the machine tag carries the builder's own number and will not get you the right parts.
  • INTAKE ONLY - INTAKE AND EXHAUST ARE NOT THE SAME VALVE - The exhaust valve on these engines runs hotter, is a different head diameter and often a different material. They are not interchangeable and fitting an intake valve in an exhaust seat will burn it out. If you have the head off and are not certain which is which, measure the head diameter before ordering.
  • WHY THEY GO - Intake valves on these engines recede into the seat and lose clearance over time, or the stem wears in the guide and the valve starts to hang. Either way you get hard starting, a lumpy idle and lost compression on one cylinder. Check the clearance cold and compare one cylinder against the other, because a single bad valve is far more common than two.
  • DO THE JOB PROPERLY WHILE THE HEAD IS OFF - Lap each new valve to its own seat and check you have an even contact band all the way round. Check the guides for side play with the new valve in place, because a new valve in a worn guide will not seal for long. Reset valve clearance to spec afterwards, and check the seat width while you are there.
