Both systems use mechanical breaker points in the same place, and the points in this kit are correct for either. The condenser is not. The parts list gives 230722-S as the BATTERY ignition condenser and 47-147-01-S as the MAGNETO condenser. They are different capacities, and the wrong one burns points and gives a weak spark. HOW TO TELL, WITHOUT TOOLS Disconnect the battery and pull the engine over. A magneto is self-energizing and will fire without a battery. Battery ignition will not spark at all. Or look at the engine: battery ignition has a cylindrical coil mounted OUTSIDE the shroud, with a primary wire running to the key switch. A magneto's coil lives under the flywheel and there is nothing external. The plug gap is another clue - .035 inch on battery ignition and .025 inch on magneto. SETTING THE POINTS. Gap is .020 inch, measured at maximum plunger lift with the points fully open. The points are behind a small cover on the side of the block, driven by a plunger that rides a lobe on the camshaft. Check the plunger moves freely in its bore - a sticking plunger burns points just as a failed condenser does. ONE THING TO CHECK BEFORE ORDERING. A great many of these engines were converted to electronic ignition over the years. Take the point cover off and confirm there are actually points and a condenser in there.
