Part 48-108-01-S, superseding 235889 and cross referencing 235902, 236214, 236215 and 236216. One set, which is one cylinder's worth. SPECIFICATION. Bore 3.375 inch, 85.7mm, standard. Stroke 3.25 inch, 82.6mm. Displacement 29.1 cubic inches, 476cc. Rating 12 horsepower. Compression ring 5/64 inch. WHICH PISTON DO YOU HAVE. This is the question that decides the part, and the engine suffix will not answer it. Kohler ran two pistons in the K series and the ring packs do not interchange. This set is for the Style A piston, which has no directional mark on the crown, a centred wrist pin and a long skirt. The later piston, which Kohler's own service manual calls Style D, carries an arrow and the word FLY cast into the crown, with an offset wrist pin and a shorter skirt, and it takes ring set 47-108-01-S standard or 47-108-03-S at .020 over. Supplier figures put this set's compression ring at five sixty fourths of an inch, about .078, and the Style D set at one sixteenth, about .062, so a caliper across the old compression ring confirms what your eyes tell you. The difference is sixteen thousandths, which any caliper will show. Kohler does not publish ring thickness itself, only end gap and a side clearance maximum of .006 inch, so treat the thickness as supplier data and the crown markings as the primary test. One more consequence worth knowing: the connecting rods differ between the two families. Kohler's manual states that the narrower pin end of the later rod is not interchangeable with the earlier Posi-Lock rod, so changing piston style is a bigger job than changing a piston. THE SUFFIX DOES NOT MATTER. K301A, K301S, K301AS, K301AQS and every other combination share the same bore. Kohler's suffixes describe the oil pan type, generator or pump duty, quiet package, gear reduction, electric start and retractable start, and none of them changes the cylinder. QUANTITY ON THE K532. The K532 is a 20 horsepower horizontally opposed twin of 53.7 cubic inches. One ring set covers one cylinder, so a K532 needs two and this listing supplies one. It shares the 3.375 inch bore with the K301 but its stroke is 3.00 inch rather than 3.25, so a ring match is not a parts match elsewhere on that engine. ADJACENT ENGINES THAT DO NOT FIT. K241, 3.25 inch bore, 23.9 cubic inches, 10 horsepower. K321, 3.50 inch bore, 31.3 cubic inches, 14 horsepower, ring set 48-108-05-S. K341, 3.75 inch bore, 35.9 cubic inches, 16 horsepower, which uses the 45-108 sets. OVERSIZE RING SETS. .010 over is 48-108-02-S, old number 235890, bore 3.385. .020 over is 48-108-03-S, old number 235891, bore 3.395. .030 over is 48-108-04-S, old number 235892, bore 3.405. Kohler stops at .030; there is no factory .040 set. Take the piston to the machine shop so the bore is cut to the part you actually have. ASSEMBLY FIGURES. Connecting rod capscrew 285 inch pounds, or 260 inch pounds for a new Posi-Lock rod and 200 if it is being reused. Cylinder head bolts 25 to 30 foot pounds. Oil pan and closure plate 350 inch pounds, which is about 29 foot pounds. Valve lash cold, intake .008 to .010 inch and exhaust .017 to .019 inch. Points gap .020 inch on battery ignition and .025 inch on magneto. Correct rod installation puts the hole in the connecting rod cap facing the camshaft. BEFORE RE-RINGING. More than .003 inch of bore taper and new rings will smoke and pass oil however well the job is done; that block wants boring and oversize parts. Check ring end gap in the bore each ring will run in and side clearance in the groove against the .006 inch maximum. After honing or boring, wash the cylinder in hot soapy water to carry the grit out before the new parts go in.

FITS THE 3.375 INCH BORE - The K301, a 12 horsepower single at 29.1 cubic inches and 476cc with a 3.25 inch stroke, and the K532 opposed twin, which shares that bore. Standard bore ring set, 48-108-01-S, which supersedes the older 235889 and cross references 235902, 236214, 236215 and 236216. The M12 is the later designation of the same engine as the K301 and takes this set too.

LOOK AT THE TOP OF YOUR OLD PISTON - THIS IS THE CHECK THAT MATTERS - Kohler ran two pistons in this engine and the ring packs do not interchange. This set is for the Style A piston: no mark on the crown, a centred wrist pin, a long skirt, and a compression ring of about .078 inch. The later piston, Kohler's Style D, has an arrow and the word FLY cast into the crown, an offset pin, a short skirt and a .062 inch ring. If that is yours, the set is 47-108-01-S, or 47-108-03-S at .020 over.

THE K532 NEEDS TWO SETS - One set does one cylinder. The K532 is a 20 horsepower horizontally opposed twin at 53.7 cubic inches, so a full job takes two sets and this listing supplies one. It shares the 3.375 inch bore with the K301 and that is all it shares - its stroke is 3.00 inch against the K301's 3.25, so do not read a ring match as a parts match anywhere else on that engine.

NOT THE K241, K321 OR K341 - These are the engines either side of the K301 and none of them shares its bore. The K241 is 3.25 inch at 23.9 cubic inches. The K321 is 3.50 inch at 31.3 cubic inches and takes 48-108-05-S. The K341 is 3.75 inch at 35.9 cubic inches and uses the 45-108 sets. The suffix on a K301 does not matter - A, S, AS, AQS and the rest are oil pan, starter and governor options that never touch the bore - but the model number does.

OVERSIZES AND ASSEMBLY FIGURES - .010 is 48-108-02-S, .020 is 48-108-03-S, .030 is 48-108-04-S, and Kohler stops there - there is no factory .040 set. Bores: standard 3.375, .385, .395, .405. Torque from Kohler's figures: connecting rod capscrew 285 inch pounds, or 260 for a new Posi-Lock rod and 200 reused; cylinder head 25 to 30 foot pounds; oil pan 350 inch pounds, about 29 foot pounds. Valve lash cold, intake .008 to .010 and exhaust .017 to .019. The rod cap hole faces the camshaft.

https://performancesawsupply.com/products/piston-rings-kohler-k301-k532-standard-3-375-bore-48-108-01-s-eh-wir7-71wm
