Bore 87.31mm, which is 3.4375 inch. Replaces Briggs part number 792306. Briggs has since superseded that number to 797011, so either one will find this set. Two things gate this part, and bore is only one of them. Get both right and it fits; get either wrong and it does not. FIRST, THE CODE DATE. Briggs used two different standard ring sets for this same bore in the same engine family, split by build date. This set covers engines built after code date 05112000. Engines built before code date 05112100 take 698375 instead. The parts look near identical and the bore is the same, so there is no way to tell them apart in the box - the code date stamped on the engine, next to the model and type numbers, is the only check. SECOND, OHV OR L-HEAD. This set is for the overhead valve engines - 280H, 280J, 281H, 282H, 283H, 284H, 285H, 286H and 28CH series, plus 21B900. The L-head 28 series is the same 87.31mm bore at the same 10 to 13 horsepower rating and uses a completely different ring set, 499996 or 696403. If you read only the bore and the horsepower off a chart you can land on the wrong one of these two. These are standard size rings. If the block has been bored oversize they will not seal - the .020 oversize mate is 792643. Mic the bore at the top of ring travel before you order. Before fitting: hone the cylinder for a crosshatch, check ring end gap in the bore, and stagger the gaps around the piston. Rings cure oil consumption and blowby on a bore that is still round and within taper. On a scored or hard glazed cylinder they will not seal and the problem comes straight back. Piston, wrist pin, clips and gaskets are not included.

STANDARD BORE RING SET, 87.31MM - That is 3.4375 inch. Replaces Briggs & Stratton 792306, which Briggs has superseded to 797011. Whichever of the two numbers your parts book or dealer shows, this is the set.

CHECK YOUR CODE DATE - THIS IS THE ONE THAT CATCHES PEOPLE - Briggs used two different standard ring sets for this same bore in the same engine family, split by build date. This set is for engines built AFTER code date 05112000. Engines built BEFORE code date 05112100 take 698375 instead. Same bore, same horsepower, near identical parts, different set. The code is stamped on the engine alongside the model and type.

OHV ENGINES, NOT L-HEAD - This covers the overhead valve singles: the 280H, 280J, 281H, 282H, 283H, 284H, 285H, 286H and 28CH series, plus 21B900. The L-head 28 series is the same 87.31mm bore at the same horsepower and takes a completely different set, 499996 or 696403.
