On a Stihl 041 the letter E in the model designation means electronic - those saws already left the factory with electronic ignition, so they neither need this nor take it. That one letter is the whole test, and it is the mistake most likely to be made on this part. This module is made for the 041 specifically, and the quickest way to tell it apart is to count the prongs. This one has ONE. The general-purpose points-replacement modules - including ours for the vintage McCulloch and Homelite saws - have TWO, and are built for two-magnet flywheels. They are not interchangeable in either direction, which is why our other module names the 041 as an exclusion. One thing worth knowing before you start: on the 041 the breaker cam is machined into the flywheel itself rather than sitting on a separate shaft, so the flywheel has to be fitted to check anything on that side. And route the kill switch wire carefully - it is easily pinched by the backing plate on reassembly, which is a common reason an otherwise good install has no spark. Before ordering, confirm the ignition is the fault. Pull the plug, ground it against the cylinder and crank the saw. No spark with sound kill-switch wiring points here. Hard starting or a saw that dies when hot is at least as likely to be fuel, an air leak or compression. It will not add power, raise RPM or change the ignition timing.
