Before plating, each cylinder goes through thirteen preparation stages so the coating penetrates evenly, and the chrome layer is held between 0.04 and 0.06 mm. Machining is done on CNC equipment. Casting tooling is checked monthly and retired at 50,000 pieces, so the last cylinder off a tool measures close to the first. WHAT IS CHECKED BEFORE PACKING - The inlet and exhaust ports on every cylinder are inspected and the burrs chamfered. Every twentieth cylinder off the line is measured in full against tolerance. The factories behind these parts have more than thirty years in cylinder and piston manufacture and also build to specification for original-equipment customers. ON ASSEMBLY - Use a piston ring compressor when you rebuild a two-cycle engine. Rings forced in by hand are how a piston land gets broken before the engine has run.

Compatible with STIHL MS461 PISTON KIT 52MM

REPLACES STIHL PART # 1128-030-2051

lil-red-barn-stihl-ms461-cylinder-piston-kit-52mm-replaces-stihl-1128-020-1250-installation-instructions-included-two-day-standard-shipping-to-all-50-states
52mm Cylinder Piston Kit 1128-020-1250 Fits Stihl MS461

Cylinder and piston kit that fits the Stihl MS 461 chainsaw. 52mm bore, 36mm stroke, 76.5cc. Replaces part number 1128-020-1250. The cylinder is chrome plated. The same kit also fits the GS 461 concrete and rock cutter, which uses the same top end. IT DOES NOT FIT THE MS 460 OR THE 046. The MS 460 has the same 52mm bore, the same 36mm stroke and the same 76.5cc displacement. On paper the two engines are identical. The MS 460 nevertheless has its own cylinder under part number 1128-020-1221, and the two are not interchangeable. Bore and displacement do not settle fitment here. Read the model off the saw. EVERY MS 461 VARIANT TAKES THIS CYLINDER. The MS 461 R, RZ, Z, VW, VWZ, RVWZ and Rescue all use the same assembly. Those letters mean wrap handle, spark arrestor muffler, carburetor heating and handle heating. None of them changes the top end. RINGS. The piston carries two compression rings in the thinner 1.2 millimeter section, 52 by 1.2mm. The matching ring number is 1122-034-3000 and the cylinder gasket is 1128-029-2310. WHAT IS IN THE KIT, AND WHAT IS NOT. Cylinder and piston. Gaskets and crankshaft seals are not included and both are worth replacing while the engine is open. BEFORE REASSEMBLY, AND A WARRANTY CONDITION. A scored piston is a symptom. On a saw of this displacement the cause is nearly always a lean mixture, from a crankshaft seal that has gone hard, a split or perished impulse line, or an intake boot that has loosened or cracked. Pressure and vacuum test the crankcase and fix the leak before the new top end goes on. The 30 day warranty on this kit is conditional on the saw having been pressure and vacuum checked, for exactly that reason: a new cylinder fitted to an air leak fails the same way the old one did. ON ASSEMBLY. Scuff the plated bore lightly rather than honing it hard, check ring end gap in this cylinder, use a ring compressor, and fit the circlips with the open end turned away from the ports.

FITS STIHL MS 461, 52MM - Replaces part number 1128-020-1250, the factory cylinder with piston for this saw. 52mm bore, 36mm stroke, 76.5cc. The cylinder is chrome plated. It also fits the GS 461 concrete cutter, which shares the same top end.

IT DOES NOT FIT THE MS 460 OR THE 046, AND HERE IS WHY THAT TRIPS PEOPLE - The MS 460 is also 52mm, also 36mm stroke, also 76.5cc. Identical on paper. It still has a different cylinder, 1128-020-1221. Matching the bore and the displacement is not enough on this family. Order by the model on the saw.

FITS EVERY MS 461 VARIANT - The R, RZ, Z, VW, VWZ, RVWZ and Rescue versions all take this same cylinder. Those suffixes are wrap handle, spark arrestor muffler, carburetor heating and handle heating, and none of them changes the top end.

TWO RINGS, 52 BY 1.2 MILLIMETER - This piston runs two compression rings rather than one, and they are the thinner 1.2mm section. Count the rings and check the groove depth on the piston you take out. The matching numbers are 1122-034-3000 for the rings and 1128-029-2310 for the cylinder gasket.

PRESSURE AND VACUUM TEST THE CRANKCASE - IT IS ALSO A WARRANTY CONDITION HERE - A saw that scored a piston did it for a reason, and on a saw this size the reason is nearly always a lean mixture from a hardened crankshaft seal, a split impulse line or a loose intake boot. The crown projects further into the combustion chamber than the flat-topped factory piston, raising compression for more low-down torque and easier starting. Measure squish clearance with solder through the plug hole before running it, do not delete the base gasket as well, and find the cause of the old failure before the saw goes back to work.

FITS STIHL MS461 - 52mm bore. A raised-crown pop-up piston kit with rings, wrist pin and circlips. Replaces piston 1128-030-2051.

NOT THE MS460, 046 OR MS462 - The MS460 and 046 share the 52mm bore and 36mm stroke but take a different piston, 1128-030-2009. The MS462 is 52mm on a 34mm stroke and is a different engine again. Read the model plate on your saw.

WHAT A POP-UP DOES - The crown projects further into the combustion chamber at top dead center, which raises compression. The factory piston is flat topped. Expect more low-down torque and easier starting, not a guaranteed power gain.

MEASURE SQUISH BEFORE YOU RUN IT - A raised crown uses up squish clearance. Check it with solder through the plug hole, turning the engine through top dead center by hand, and do not delete the base gasket as well: the two changes stack and the crown can reach the head.

FIND OUT WHY THE OLD ONE FAILED - A scored piston had a cause. A hardened crankshaft seal, a split intake boot or impulse line leans the mixture and will take the new piston the same way.
