Standard bore piston kit for Kohler KT17, M18, MV16 and MV18 twin cylinder engines, replacing Kohler part number 52-874-11-S. Bore is 3.125 inch, 79.4mm. The kit contains the piston, the ring set, the wrist pin and the clips. One kit covers one cylinder, so a twin cylinder engine requires two. This kit does not fit the KT19, M20 or MV20, which use Kohler 52-874-16-S. Those engines share the same bore but have a longer stroke and a different piston compression height, so a bore measurement alone will not tell you which piston you need. Identify the engine by its model number. For a block that has been bored oversize, Kohler lists .003, .010, .020 and .030 kits and the finished bore should be measured before ordering. Hone the cylinder before assembly and fit new rod bearings, head gaskets and valve stem seals while the engine is open.
- FITS KOHLER KT17, M18, MV16 AND MV18 twin cylinder engines. Replaces Kohler 52-874-11-S. Standard bore, 3.125 inch or 79.4mm. In the kit: the piston, the ring set, the wrist pin and the clips. This is for a cylinder that is still at standard size and within service limits, with a piston that has scuffed, cracked a ring land, or picked up on the skirt.
- ONE KIT, ONE CYLINDER. A twin cylinder engine needs two. Order both before the engine comes apart so it is not sitting on the bench waiting on a second piston.
- DOES NOT FIT KT19, M20 OR MV20. Those engines use a different piston, Kohler 52-874-16-S. They share the same 79.4mm bore but they have a longer stroke and a different compression height, so the bore measurement alone will fool you. Go by the engine model, not by the bore. This is the expensive mistake on this part.
- STANDARD SIZE ONLY. Kohler lists .003, .010, .020 and .030 oversize kits for these engines. If the block has been bored, measure the finished bore and order the kit that matches. Be careful reading cross-reference charts on this family, because several sellers have the oversize numbers mislabeled.
- WHILE THE ENGINE IS APART. Hone the cylinder so the new rings have something to bed against, check rod bearing clearance and the crank journals, and fit a new head gasket and valve stem seals. Stagger the ring end gaps around the piston and set them to the figures in your engine manual.
