Piston ring set for the Briggs & Stratton 40 cubic inch Intek V-twin, 656cc, bore 2.970 inch or 75.44mm, replacing Briggs 698430. One set per order, which covers one cylinder, so a V-twin requires two sets. Model numbers include 40F777 and 40H777. Briggs used more than one ring design across this engine family and the alternative is 499604 at the same bore, so check the model, type and code numbers stamped on the blower housing before ordering. This set does not fit the 44 cubic inch Intek V-twin, which is 724cc with a 3.120 inch bore and takes ring set 792026. These are standard size rings for a cylinder still within service limits. Rings cure oil consumption and blowby on a bore that is round and showing crosshatch, but will not seal against a scored or glazed cylinder, so measure before ordering and hone the cylinder before assembly.
- FITS THE BRIGGS & STRATTON 40 CUBIC INCH INTEK V-TWIN, 656cc, bore 2.970 inch or 75.44mm. Model numbers include 40F777 and 40H777. Replaces Briggs 698430. When these engines start burning oil and pushing blowby out the breather, tired rings on a bore that is otherwise still good is the usual cause.
- ONE SET, ONE CYLINDER. Briggs packages this ring set per piston, so a V-twin needs two sets to do the whole engine. Order both before you split it down.
- CHECK YOUR MODEL, TYPE AND CODE. Briggs used more than one ring design on this engine family across its production run, and the other one is 499604 at the same 75.44mm bore. Same bore, different ring. The model and type numbers stamped on the blower housing are what tell you which you have, and it is worth two minutes with a flashlight before ordering.
- NOT THE 44 CUBIC INCH ENGINE. The 44ci Intek V-twin is 724cc with a 3.120 inch bore and takes ring set 792026. That is 3.8mm larger and will not fit. The two engines look identical from outside the shroud, so go by the model number rather than the shape.
- STANDARD BORE. This set is for a cylinder still at 2.970 inch and within service limits. Rings fix oil consumption on a bore that is round, within taper and showing crosshatch. On a scored or glazed cylinder they will not seal and the oil burning returns. Measure the bore, hone before assembly, and stagger the ring end gaps.
