This kit adds a metal piston stop tool – the tool you need to lock the piston in place for safe removal of clutches and flywheel nuts. Buying both tools together saves you from ordering a separate piston stop later in your rebuild. HOW THE RING COMPRESSOR WORKS When installing a piston into a cylinder, the piston rings must be compressed into their grooves so the cylinder can slide over them. The compressor bands wrap around the piston and hold the rings compressed, acting as a "third hand" so you can install the cylinder without breaking a ring. The four band sizes cover pistons from 30mm to 60mm in diameter. HOW THE PISTON STOP WORKS The metal piston stop threads into the spark plug hole and stops the piston travel, locking the crankshaft in place. This lets you loosen and remove clutch assemblies and flywheel nuts – which require significant torque – without the crankshaft spinning and without jamming a rope or other makeshift stop into the cylinder. USAGE NOTES Select the compressor band that best matches your piston diameter. Lubricate the piston and rings before installation. Compress the rings with the band, then guide the cylinder over the piston, easing the band off as the cylinder slides down. For clutch/flywheel work, thread the piston stop into the spark plug hole gently until it contacts the piston – never force it or use it to apply heavy torque against the piston crown.
